Rooftop Plant Removal-Victoria Street

  • Where: Victoria Street, Central London
  • What: Rooftop Chiller Replacement
  • Client: Commercial Property Owner (Confidential)
  • Partner: Not Specified

The challenge: We first performed a feasibility study, looking at options for replacing the transformer. The radius of the lift dictated just two potential options- a helicopter lift, or a large crane sited on Victoria Street and involving a road closure with tight timelines.

With the mobile crane option preferred, we designed a full diversion route for buses and traffic to Westminster City Council’s specifications. This required extensive liaison with Westminster to agree the best solution.

The job required complete closure of Victoria Street, but with only two possible dates and a very short window of time due to major works ongoing.

The transformer had to be removed from its enclosure at roof level and located to a lift point where part of the roof was removed to enable the transformer to be safely removed and replaced.

As an additional complication, the crane lift was over retail outlets that were still operational, so with corporation from the retailers the shops were temporarily emptied of the public, and the footpath closed for each lift to be undertaken safely.
