Full substation fit-outs require several heavy units to be moved into a confined space in a carefully planned sequence. Each item must be positioned correctly before the next can follow, as an incorrect sequence can restrict access and create costly delays.
On this project, the Riglift team managed the offload, ground preparation and internal movement of a transformer, ring main unit, two LV distribution boards and a pallet of ancillary equipment.
Sleepers and packing timbers were used to establish a stable rolling surface between the delivery vehicle and substation entrance. The units were then transferred across this surface on rollers before hydraulic jacks were used to move each item from the roller track onto its final foundation position.
Traffic management was maintained throughout the operation to protect the crew and provide a controlled working area around the delivery vehicle.
All units — the transformer, RMU, two LV boards and ancillary components — were successfully installed into the substation.
The sleeper-and-roller system created a controlled, low-friction route from the delivery vehicle to the installation area, while the hydraulic jacking sequence enabled each unit to be positioned accurately onto its final foundation without damage.
Successfully completing a multi-unit substation installation in a single visit depends heavily on sequencing. If equipment is introduced in the wrong order, one unit can restrict access for the next and cause significant delays.
Riglift planned the installation sequence in advance, allowing the team to arrive on site with a defined methodology and execute the operation efficiently from the first offload through to final positioning.
