Oil-filled electrical switchgear requires careful handling at end of life. The oil must be removed in a controlled manner before the panels can be physically separated and moved — both to protect the environment and to reduce the weight and risk during the subsequent handling operation.
Working alongside the client’s engineers, the Riglift team managed the full sequence: draining and capturing the dielectric oil using a specialist de-oiling kit, then separating the panel sections using rollers before preparing them for removal by lorry loader.
Electrical and hand tools were used throughout to disconnect and dismantle panel components safely, with the operation carefully sequenced to maintain environmental control throughout the decommissioning and removal process.
All panels were successfully de-oiled, separated and removed from site in compliance with environmental requirements.
The structured approach — draining first, then separating and extracting — ensured that the dielectric oil was contained before the physical handling stages began, significantly reducing the risk of spillage during the removal operation.
